Karl Reiss leaves Academy
By Marshall Smith, Staff
Reporter
Idyllwild Arts (IA) CEO Bill Lowman confirmed
on July 11 that Dr. Karl Reiss, vice president and director of the
Academy and a key figure in Lowman’s succession plans, left IA on July
6, the date the IA board terminated his position.
Lowman, who will now assume headmaster responsibilities in addition to
his CEO and fund-raising responsibilities, issued the following
statement regarding Reiss’ departure: “Due to economic conditions and
administrative restructuring, the plan for the president’s succession
and retirement has been placed on hold and Bill Lowman will resume the
responsibilities of head of school. The position of vice president and
director of the Academy will be eliminated effective July 6, 2009. Dr.
Karl Reiss has chosen to seek other opportunities elsewhere.”
Lowman stated that this would be the only statement or comment on
Reiss’ departure that IA would issue.
Reiss joined the IA faculty in April 2007, having served previously as
head of school at The American Boychoir School (ABS) a professional,
residential, vocal music boarding school in Princeton, N.J. Prior to
his tenure at ABS, Reiss spent 13 years teaching and in administrative
posts at The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Fla. He also taught applied
percussion at Texas Southern University, State University of New York,
Brockport, and Nazareth College.
Reiss, a percussionist, performed professionally with the Jacksonville
Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Ballet Orchestra, the Texas Chamber
Orchestra and the Houston Concert Chorale. He holds a bachelor’s degree
in music performance from Nazareth College in Rochester, N.Y. and an
educational doctorate in curriculum and instruction from the University
of Houston.
While at IA, Reiss promoted academics as an integral part of student
life. “Musicians need math and science to be functional members of
society,” he noted in a July 2007 interview with the Town Crier. “Many
folks see a schism, but I see it as holistic. You don’t live life in
isolation.”
