Hiker is missing
By J.P. Crumrine, Assistant Editor
A search for
Deborah Huglin, a missing 54-year-old Cardiff by the Sea woman, was
suspended Monday evening. She was reported missing Friday morning,
March 21.
Riverside County Sheriff’s deputies were alerted
to the possibility of a lost hiker in the Apple Canyon area. The
deputies, from the Hemet Station, went to the 58000 block of Apple
Canyon Road in Mountain Center.
During the search, several of her jackets were
found near the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), according to Lee Arnson,
Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit (RMRU) volunteer. The search began along
Hurkey Creek in Apple Canyon Friday afternoon and continued to the
Pacific Crest Trail (PCT).
Arnson described the trail from the Zen Center in Apple Valley to the
PCT as scenic and majestic. At that PCT elevation, about 7,000 feet,
she could have gone north or south. However, the east side of the
trail, simply one step further, has very rugged ice and snow
conditions, according to Arnson. This is where her clothing articles
were found.
Additional nearby snow and ice teams were summoned during the weekend.
However, unfortunate accidents happen to anyone. On Sunday, one of the
rescuers with a San Dimas group fell and broke a leg. A helicopter was
needed to bring him out of the treacherous area.
The search for Huglin was suspended Monday night. Anyone with
information about Huglin or this incident is encouraged to call Senior
Investigator Kevin Duffy at the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department
Hemet Station at (951) 791-3400.
