How to celebrate
Thanksgiving in Idyllwild

By Kathy Bryson, Advertising Sales

Celebrating Thanksgiving weekend in Idyllwild is, in itself, a reason to be thankful, with the town dressed in the warm colors of autumn, the air clean and crisp, no traffic jams and plenty of options available for food, fun and holiday shopping.

Many families will be giving thanks for the work the Idyllwild HELP Center has done in organizing generous donations of money and food from businesses and individuals. Executive Director Karen Patterson said the HELP Center received 100 turkeys from County Supervisor Jeff Stone and 18 turkeys from Kevin Duffy of the Riverside County Sheriff Department. The donations allow the HELP Center to provide turkeys, vegetables and food vouchers to needy families and individuals, so that everyone can enjoy a Thanksgiving feast.

Several restaurants will be open, with some serving traditional Thanksgiving-style dinners and others offering their regular menus.

The Bread Basket is serving a traditional Thanksgiving dinner from noon to 6 p.m. Reservations are required. Phone 659-3506.

The Gastrognome is serving traditional, complete Thanksgiving dinners from 1 to 7 p.m. Reservations are required. Phone 659-5055.

The American Legion Post 800 is serving Thanksgiving dinner from 1 to 3 p.m. The dinner is free, but diners are asked to bring a dish to share and donations are appreciated. The public is welcome. Phone 659-3517.

Goodtimes Pub and Grill is serving turkey and ham dinners. Hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., with dinner served from noon to 6 p.m. Phone 659-5222.

The Chuckwagon Restaurant at the Silent Valley RV resort is serving Thanksgiving dinner from noon to 5 p.m. Bring a dessert and get $1 off. The resort is located at 46305 Poppet Flats Road. Phone (951) 849-4501.

El Diablo Café is open from 11 a.m. to midnight, serving its regular menu. Phone 659-2560.

The Red Kettle is open for breakfast and lunch from 6 a.m. to noon. Phone 659-4063.

Arriba Mexican Food is serving its regular menu from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Phone 659-4960.

Get a Thanksgiving dinner to go at Village Market. It is open on Thanksgiving from 5:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Owner Art Levitt said bakery, deli and grocery goods also are available. Phone 659-3169.

For those who prefer a different fare, Nature’s Wisdom is serving specialties such as organic chicken sausage, sauerkraut and potato salad, a variety of soups and stews, and Anna’s panini sandwiches. Fresh organic apple-pumpkin strudel, cream cheese and mango-pineapple strudel also is available to tempt holiday diners. Phone 659-4300.

Folks in the Pine Cove area will find the Pine Cove Market open and stocked to come to the rescue of cooks who need that missing ingredient for their feast. The market packs a large variety of items in a small, well-organized space. The market is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Phone 659-4955.

The many shops and galleries are ready for holiday shoppers. Shelves are stocked with gifts, artwork and clothing that reflect the spirit and individualism of the mountain community. Unique art, affordable quality souvenirs, tasteful home décor, holiday decorations, and clothing and shoes to keep warm when weather on the Hill catches you by surprise, are available. Many stores will be open later than usual to accommodate shoppers.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will be meeting, posing for photos and handing out candy canes to children from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday near the El Diablo Café. At about 4 p.m., Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive at the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on an Idyllwild Fire truck, to visit and spread holiday cheer to all.

The lighting of the giant Christmas tree in the center of town, a gift to the community from the Soroptimists of Idyllwild, signals the official start of the holiday season. Paul Riggi is charged with lighting the tree, and wife, Diane, is the program coordinator of the Tree Lighting Ceremony.

Mary and Doug Austin will pass out song lyrics for community singing of Christmas carols, while spreading joy and merriment throughout the congregation. Twelve costumed players dressed in Victorian fashion, from the Olde English Theatre, will mingle amongst the crowd and speak in Victorian style. The Idyllwild Costume Guild donated the costumes.

Fire Chief Steve Kunkle is once again the master of ceremony and, according to Doug, “is irresistible to all females when in costume.” The Tree Lighting Ceremony starts at 4 p.m. and ends at 5 p.m.

The Harvest Festival of Arts and Crafts, sponsored for more than 40 years by the Idyllwild Rotary Club, will take place at Town Hall on Cedar Street from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Vendors will offer handmade goods of clothing, crafts, jewelry, gourds, specialty food products, holiday decorations and more. Admission is free. Food, drinks and homemade bakery items will be available. Some of the proceeds will benefit projects the Rotary sponsors.

Dates and times for activities throughout the week may be found in the Arts and Entertainment and Community calendars, both in this newspaper.
