Permit comes for concerts
at new site

By Marshall Smith, Staff Reporter

Ken Dahleen, Idyllwild Summer Community Concert Series (ISCS) producer, received county approval to stage the 10th-annual event at the site of the Idyllwild Community Center (ICC). After reviewing the stipulations contained in the May 26 permit, the ISCS board said it will move forward with plans to stage the event at the new location and will attempt to comply with all conditions.

Dahleen noted permit costs ran $630.56 and that one condition of the permit, requiring seven portable bathrooms, adds another $1,000 to an already precarious balance sheet. In the past, two portable bathrooms had been adequate to serve the needs of attendees.

The problem for the series, having crossed the permit process hurdle, remains the funding gap. ISCS remains $9,000 in the red after receiving a $5,000 check from the Idyllwild Community Recreation Council (ICRC). At the $5,000 level, ICRC will be a corporate sponsor for the series and as such, its logo will be attached to all promotional materials relating to this year’s season.

Dahleen is badly in need of additional corporate sponsors or other large donors to ensure the season’s viability. Riverside County 3rd District Supervisor Jeff Stone has pledged $1,000 to help fund the series but other large donors have not come forward.

Other hurdles for the series are contained in the permit itself, including requirements that the series not violate the county noise ordinance. The noise ordinance, if enforced as written with existing decibel level requirements, would make the presentation of any outdoor concerts untenable, including the annual jazz festival held on the Idyllwild Arts campus.

Dahleen announced that Doug Austin will be master of ceremonies for this season. As a special addition for the first concert starting at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, July 2, a floor will be brought in for dancing under the stars to the best music of the big band era as played by Ken Dahleen and his Big Band Staff.

Donors may mail checks made out to Idyllwild Community Concerts Inc., P.O. Box 1542, Idyllwild, CA 92549, or make deposits directly at Guaranty Bank into the concert account. Dahleen will provide donor forms for anyone who wishes them. He can be reached for questions or additional information at (760) 413-4638.
